BASILICA OF SANTO STEFANO BOLOGNA

The Basilica of Santo Stefano is a complex of worship buildings in Bologna. It overlooks the square of the same name and is also known as the "Seven Churches" complex. It has the dignity of a smaller basilica.

From the Piazza Santo Stefano there is an overview of the facades of the three churches of the Crucifix, the Sepulcher and the Vital and Agricultural Saints. The group presents, despite the different typologies, the numerous interventions, restorations and refurbishments, a consolidated stylistic homogeneity that make it the most interesting Romanesque monument of the city of Bologna.

Outside the basilica there were two medieval sarcophagi that guarded the remains of the first bishops of the Church of Bologna. After the restoration of the square pavement in 1994, these sarcophagi were placed in the adjacent garden on the right side of the Church of the Crucifix. The church has a single nave with vaulted roof and presbytery raised on the crypt, it is of longobard origin (VIII century).
